The diving reflex also known as the bradycardic response causes babies to naturally hold their breath when submerged. It is believed to disappear around 6 months so we decided after Liv was use to the water that we would do it. We did not plan on dunking her this past weekend or I would have been better prepared with a GoPro to capture her underwater. But you can't always plan life, sometimes it just happens.
Here are some tips I read about preparing your baby:
- During bath time, pour water over your babies head.
- In the pool, make eye contact with your baby.
- Count to three (or say "name, ready, go!") to set the signal.
- Blow quickly on your baby's face so they hold their breath before submerging.
